Group Show/ November 16th, 6-9, Bridge Red Studios/Project Space

Bridge Red Studios/Project Space Invites you to come to the exhibit: “Ghosts” Duane Hanson, opening Sunday, November 16th from 6-9 pm.

Well known outside of South Florida, artist Duane Hanson’s early sculptures depicted people in violent situations. The subject matter was topical; it dealt with race riots, abortion, motorcycle accidents, and the Vietnam War, among other things. In 1970, Hanson began to focus on a more insidious subject in “turn[ing] his attention from topics that were less sensational, depicting psychological and spiritual malaise rather than the extremes of human suffering” (Christine Lindey). Hanson achieved startlingly real looking figures, that often fooled people into thinking they were living beings. He often used people he knew to model for him including Robert Thiele as the model for the Football Player. In this exhibit, we get to see Hanson’s process with the inclusion of “body parts”, one of which was the first cast of the head of the Football Player. Recently, the “body parts” were on tour alongside Hanson’s finished works. They have been exhibited in Copenhagen, at Arken Museum in Ishoj (2007j, Helsinki Art Museum in Finland (2007), Volkingen, Germany (2007), Kunsthalle Krems In Vienna, Austria (2008-09), Fundacion Canal in Madrid, Spain (2008), Musee de la Cite, Paris (2010), Burda Museum in Baden-Baden, Germany (2010-11), and Museum d’Ixelles in Brussels, Belgium (2014). The parts, never before shown by themselves in a solo gallery exhibition, give a unique insight into Hanson’s working process.

Statement about the exhibition:
Babies are a dangerous subject for a contemporary artist – there’s the risk of falling into the pit of cute, trite or cliché. In spite of that, Carol K. Brown takes up the challenge. Using paintings, photographs and video, she explores the line between “art” and “cute”. The work in this exhibition alludes to the overwhelming nature of parenthood, and the loss of control of our offspring
