Structural Word Paintings

My Structural Word Paintings are single pages of books with the content deconstructed. The removal of most of the words is not meant as erasure, but instead is a tool for recreation. The books I take pages from are those like Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography, The Story of My Experiments With Truth. These are books that can be viewed in many ways, perhaps as having great meaning, as calls to action, and perhaps as shading into indoctrination. The materials have meaning, as well, because they are ancient and timeless. Lime paint was used to paint Pompeiian murals, and Venetian plaster—made from marble dust—was popular in the Roman Empire. They have been used for centuries in the making of homes, and these paintings are about creating a comfortable space for everyone.
